Yesterday in a Paris gallery, bloody paintings were on display that were done by a 29-year old singer, Pete Doherty. Doherty was absent from his shining moment as he is incarcerated for violating his probation. His paintings are all done in blood.
Paris - The exhibition at the Chappe Gallery in the Montmartre district of the French capital contains some 30 paintings done by Doherty, using his own blood as well as pencils and paintbrushes. People say what constitutes art is up to the individual and it will certainly be up for discussion whether those in the art world take Doherty's gruesome creations seriously.

For the past several years, Doherty, best known for his role as a singer for the group Babyshambles, has been dabbling in creating his own art. The signatures on the paintings is done in his own blood, of course, as well as a needle that's been used.

One of his paintings is a sketch of Kate Moss, his ex-girlfriend. In another painting, he depicts Moss on a sofa, and titled it : "Ms Moss reclines".

On the page, Doherty has written ramblings about their tumultuous relationship, including the words "harmonious in love", "a kick off is hinted at. She's not been tetchy at all then... only firing up my heart," and "inspiring and exciting my soul".

It's been suggested that he may be selling off his collection because he wishes to rid himself of the reminders of their relationship. Doherty and Moss split last year.

Human material isn't the only thing that Doherty has used. In another piece, he uses a photograph of the topless singer drinking which is covered with ink scrawls of mysterious initials, a Star of David and a swastika

Unfortunately for Doherty, he is going to miss the whole showing. He was jailed April 8th, for repeated failures to take the court-ordered drug testing. He'll be locked up for three and a half months.

His original offenses include: possessing drugs including heroin, crack cocaine, cannabis and ketamine. As well, he has convictions for assault, possessing a flick knife, other drug and driving offenses. He has been in court more than 15 times since 2004.

If an artist wants to use his/her own blood to paint that's fine but the work here says nothing , I get a who cares reaction from it.

I thought it was gross...what if this man had AIDS, ya know? I think it's very strange to want to use blood to paint with!

generally you should not touch artwork so there is no danger there, it is unusual but soem art is.

True...most art isn't meant to be touched and art is in the eye of the beholder. What one might consider offensive, might not be to another.

There are worse mediums that have been used. I think the disease thing can be exaggerated. If not already, the pictures could certainly be sprayed with a fixative. This might even be necessary to prevent the blood turning black.

The medium has great potential for anti-war art.

Thanks for your take on this, skeptikool. I am sure that something was done to preserve them, at any rate. The disease thing I was concerned (erroneously) about.

Blood has been used all over history. The Spanish are very well-known for creating paintings of scenes with Catholic martyrs that were covered in real, sticky and quite disgusting blood.

To me, it says nothing more than that this guy is trying to show off. An unknown nobody would simply be ignored in such a case. Someone with the right connections is bombarded to "Real Artist". The world was really waiting for the genius Pete Doherty. Hooray. ^_^

Let's hope that it's not Doherty. I didn't see that his "works" were anything to write home about!
