article imagePenis Thefts in Congo Raise Fears

By Gar Swaffar     Apr 23, 2008 in Crime
West Africa is still enamored with the concept of witchcraft and has recently been deluged with calls to radio shows, the police and rumours of "thefts" occurring to some men.
Kinshasa, the capital of Democratic Republic of Congo's has been hit by rumours of penis thefts occurring to men and amid the allegations of witchcraft several lynchings have been attempted. Some of the victims have been detained by the police for substantiation of the allegations. The men are suggesting the penis has been stolen or shrunk to an insignificant size. The thefts is able to occur even by the men being just bumped on a bus. Some have suggested that all men remain clear of anyone on a bus wearing a gold ring.
Kinshasa's police chief, Jean-Dieudonne Oleko made the following pronouncement:
"I'm tempted to say it's one huge joke," Oleko said.
"But when you try to tell the victims that their penises are still there, they tell you that it's become tiny or that they've become impotent. To that I tell them, 'How do you know if you haven't gone home and tried it'," he said.
Some residents of Kishasa have alluded to a separatist sect living in Bas-Congo province of being the instigators of the penis thefts.
Some stories are easier to write than others, some are difficult. Some are very difficult to do and not spill ones coffee in the morning.
