It looks like Canada's DigitalJournal.com have finally gotten a nod from none other than TechCrunch, one of the Web's most respected Web 2.0 blogs.
Digital Journal has been a friend of mine for a few years now. I think I originally came across it after seeing it posted on Digg with the headline "Readers Cash in on Social Network : The Real Digg Killer?."

My curiosity was piqued and I hit the site, signed up and was shocked to actually make a few dollars posting news items. After learning the basics and getting my posting method together (thanks to ex-regular Wolfman 2000) who showed me the ropes I found that I could actually earn a few bucks posting news articles, unlike Digg.com where I'd spent my time previously.

As with most DJ users I hit my major addiction point and was posting 5 to 15 articles a day and became completely hooked, racking up a couple hundred dollars a month before life took some turns and my addictions turned elsewhere. Since that time I've remained a regular user of the site and still enjoy the experience.

Months ago the DJ team sent me a message about them being featured in TechCrunch and me being a huge TechCrunch fan, I shot over to the site and started submitted my friends from Canada as a website to watch out for. I'm pretty sure that several of us took up that charge...

The good news is that all this time later the TechCruchers have reviewed the site on their high profile tech blog . Below are some excerpts from the article:

Digital Journal has relaunched their citizen journalism site with a range of new features.

Digital Journal offers a Citizen Journalism site in a similar fashion to Instablogs, OhMyNews, Newsvine, Norg Media and others. Members contribute news items for the site, and in theory the wisdom of the crowd combines to create a Google friendly news resource. Where Digital Journal perhaps is a little different in this space is that it revenue shares with contributors, and has paid out $38,000 to CitJ’s already (note I said in this space, the model has been used by blog networks for years, and the line between this and blogging is pretty thin).

They then go on to speak about the new features and functionality that was recently added to DJ.

The new features include collaboration tools that is claimed to set the site apart from the competition: “Blogging, paid news reporting, a massive photo department, social networking tools like Groups, and much more.”

Thank you Malan for your kind words here. We are humbled and delighted to appear on the front page of the renowned TechCrunch and to see support from DJers.

We literally live and breathe for this site and we do whatever we can to create a fantastic community for our incredibly talented citizen journalists all over the world.

Just had a look at Newsvine.

Ha bloody ha. Call those threads?

It's funny, but it's not news.

It's not even writing. There's no actual content. It's like the others, be a mailbox, then find article... post link... eat birdseed...

    It's third party blogging.

If people think that's good, what have we got to beat?

The people I saw on Newsvine have posted huge numbers of "articles", like 50 or so, they have reps based on a thing called Vine City, and they don't even have to pay to register.

They should have a disclaimer saying any resemblance to citizen journalism is entirely accidental.
