A bank teller at Huntington Bank in Indianapolis was shot in the stomach during a robbery early Tuesday morning. The robber was able to escape with an undisclosed amount of money.
At 9:30 a.m. the robber entered the branch and jumped over the counter screaming. He shot the teller who is five months pregnant with twins in the lower abdomen according to police spokesman Lt. Jeff Duhamell.
The teller was conscience and alert when taken to hospital. She is listed in serious to critical condition.
"This is senseless. Some poor lady, trying to make a living, pregnant, shot by a man without any provocation," said Indianapolis Police Chief Michael Spears
It is believed that there are more an one person involved in the robbery as a car was waiting to drive the shooter away.
The local schools were in lock down mode as the police search for the robbers.
There were three employees and one customer in the bank during the crime. It is unusual for bank robbers to shoot tellers because they are trained to hand over the cash.
