article imageTrees Have Right Too

By Lew Waters     Apr 18, 2008 in World
In a presentation before Portland’s Urban Forest Commission, Portland, Oregon City Council Member, Dan Saltzman, lamenting on private property owners cutting trees on their property, stated, “Trees have rights too.”
Audio of his words was played this evening on the Victoria Taft radio program from Portland. Commissioner Saltzman seemed to have an abnormal concern for trees as he lamented that “I can’t control the destiny of trees on public property, but land owners may just cut them down as they please.”
Commissioner Saltzman is calling for a stronger enforcement of Portland's ordinance levying fines of up to $1,000 if land owners cut down trees on their property without first seeking and obtaining a tree cutting permit from Portland’s Urban Forestry and the Bureau of Development Services.
In an interview with K103 FM News, Saltzman said he believes "trees have rights," and the city should impose civil penalties for violations of Portland’s tree ordinance.
This writer feels the root of Portland’s problems have been exposed. Perhaps Commissioner Saltzman will stump around the rest of the state to bark his message of trees rights.
