23 year old Reuters camerman was killed by flying darts from an Israeli tank shell on Wednesday in the Gaza Strip as he was covering events in the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip for Reuters.
X-rays displayed by physicians who examined the body of Fadel Shana in Gaza's Shifa hospital showed several of the controversial weapons, known as flechettes, embedded in the 23-year-old Palestinian's chest and legs.
16 other Palestinians and 3 Israeli soldiers also died on a day of intense violence in the area.
David Schlesinger, Reuters' editor-in-chief said that Shana's vehicle was clearly marked showing that he was a professionional journalist doing his duty.
Hundreds of people mainly local journalists marched in Shana's funeral procession earlier today. His body was draped in a Palestinian flag while his flak jacket and damaged camera were carried along on a separated stretcher.
Rueters's soundman Wafa Abu Mizyed 25 also sustained a shrapnel wound in the incident. Two passing youth's also died in the same explosion.
Dr. Yunes Ramadan Awadallah, one of the physicians who examined Shana's body, said he suffered multiple lacerations from projectiles, some of which appeared to have entered his chest through his neck and shoulder, severing his spinal cord.
Shana was a part of a 15 person Reuters staff that has been working in the Gaza Strip.
Journalists have become casualties on numerous occasions in the Palestinian territories. Media watchdogs estimate that nine have been killed in the West Bank and Gaza Strip since 2000
