Verdi's 'A Masked Ball'- 9/11 The Musical
The stage is set with the recreation of the ruins of New York's World Trade Center. A women with a toothbrush mustache painted on, does the Nazi salute, naked men and women in Mickey Mouse hats- all set the scene for Verdi's "A Masked Ball".
In the Erfurt theater in Germany, created by an Australian director, Johann Kresnik, the production of Verdi's "A Masked Ball", is set to open on Saturday, April 12, 2008, despite calls from a German local politician to boycott the performance, which has gone ignored.
According to Kresnik, the play is a populist critique of modern American society and he states, "It will be a different, a provocative masked ball on the ruins of the World Trade Centre. The naked stand for people without means, the victims of capitalism, the underclass, who don’t have anything anymore."
The people he speaks of are all on stage, naked and wearing Mickey Mouse hats.
In another scene a woman sits on the broken up concrete in the midst of the destruction after two planes crashed into the Towers of the World Trade Center, singing.
  Vote it up!

In yet another, a woman in a red dress, stands on stage, a toothbrush mustache of the type that Hitler wore, painted above her upper lip, arm raised in a salute to Hitler, and scenes of men dressed in uniform and others in the colors of red, white and blue, as they lay an American flag over the bodies of those killed on 9/11.
Some believe in this is in very bad taste and others are asking, "isn't a lecture from Germany about human rights still a century or two premature?"
I will leave it to readers to decide whether they agree with those assessments or not.

Somehow being lectured on capitalism by any Euro Country is over thedg for me.
As regards the "victims" of capitalism, WTF?
Euro Artsy Trash, hope they find a way to feel good about themselves someday.

As do I. Then add in nudity and Mikey Mouse ears? That's not even funny.

No it isn't. Not funny, not in good taste and I don't know many people other than a couple I will not name, that would even consider this "art".
Singing and dancing on the graves of 9/11 victims.

Lew, I find myself asking that question multiple times a day as I go through the news.

I think what many Americans fail to notice is that many Europeans do not like Americans. America, for them, is just a bunch of crap. Many hate it because it "causes" wars or better - goes to war for no reason and thus, they like to make fun of it. However, I do not accept this type of stuff - if my comment seems as though it does.

What I found when stationed in Europe was that we are more seen as an "upstart," the new kid on the block, so to speak and grew very fast and successful, bypassing the old countries our founders came from.
Call it jealousy, if it fits.

Yes and I notice most of those same countries didn't have a problem when it was their hides we were pulling out of the fire.

No, it didn't, Theodora. You have the advantage here since you came from abroad...so you can offer us a different perspective on this.

Holy shit, this is aweful! I guess I'm not surprised after living in the country with its shops with signs literally adorned with GOLD.
And where their taxi cabs were mercedes benz.
And where there were few places open beyond their "merry ol land of oz" song like lifestyles to get anything accomplished, other than drink or eat or swim naked in hallen bad this or that.
Of course we americans aren't liked by them.
Germans don't like anyone - My favourite BRITISH COMMERCIAL was one depicting a very svelt brit awaking and throwing his towl and beer out beating the fat bald speedo wearing germs to the good spots by the pool (they were forced to the shaded areas...awe).
They wear blinders - in their slick back hair, black glasses, black turtle knecks, skin tight black jeans and black shoes......blinders - dieter is a dodo.

I remember when grand forks afb was on the list (north dakota) - the town of nearly 300 bars who couldn't stand military, bitched about the diversity it drew to their armpit community. And during the flood in 1996 (or was it 1995) how the base was the sanctuary for grand forks.....ahhhh, every single bus lined the 11 miles or so between the base and the town showing support for the base when it was on the "list".
Right. Support.
That closure was the best movement (bowel - like and pcs) that I had experienced.
Europe is no different I guess.
I enjoyed germany but their "esoterica" was strong - very undiverse. Their treatment of the turkish people was far worse than we treat any group in our country.
We lived in a tiny (i stress tiny) turkish community and it was like living in a totally different country.
Hippocrytes in their expression - which is not remotely art.
Oh Calcutta is better art than this!

Well, that might be the case but by some countries Americans are seen as arrogant. People not only hate the American government but also the people and they find Americans very dumb and the culture not so smart. They also think that children do not get the proper education in America - they send their kids to USA because you can get better jobs if you are educated in America and get paid better, not because the educational system is great.
I don't think it is a case of jealousy. I just think the Europeans are tired of Americans - basically they're annoyed because of the Iraq war, other countries are plain mad because the soldiers are there trying to make "peace" in the country, even though, according to the people, Americans are the ones who are causing the trouble.
I am just telling you what I have heard from people who live in Europe.
Not to mention that when 9/11 happened in USA, some countries celebrated it. That was wrong, but that is what happened and it was all over the news.
-
Perhaps but other countries showed us great support. For every Iraqi that people claim does not want us there I can quote you 10, from their own mouths and emails to me and my blog and on their own blogs, that thank heavens we are there.
The media is in large part responsible but that makes no difference. Those too ignorant to bother to get the truth themselves, deserve to remain ignorant.

The dislike for America started far before 9/11. When I was 16 or 17 I forget I went to England and Ireland for two weeks. I was treated to alot of hatred just because I was an American. One man hated Americans because he was in love with an American woman who spurned him. I felt that was rediculas but whatever. In Ireland I stepped off the boat from England to Dublin and was greeted by a drunkard yelling obscenities at our group of teens saying something about "you *expletive* Americans are not welcome here, go home. Then the shoppe keepers were uspet we were buying thier goods but not the most expensive. Even though thier money was worth 2x as much as mine somehow I was "rich." So I cannot beleive this is all about Iraq, from my perspective when countries don't get what they want from America, they villify us. When they do get what they want, the smile to our faces and give knives to our enemies to stab us with while our back is turned.
Btw, over in the UK I had a lovely time, enjoyed the culture, and was treated well more than I was not, far more. The minority of peoples in a culture shouldn't reflect the whole. The British might not like my government, but many of them were more than happy to get to know me.
As far as the play goes, whatever. If they want to put on a sensationalized peice of propaganda and think of themselves as special because it is "controversial" to each his own. However, in my eyes, it is about as artistic as a pile of garbage with paint splashed over it symbolizing an artist's "angst."

Sam,
The UK was awesome I thought too. I lived there for several years and even in ireland, we didn't get any hate yet i never traveled in groups. Just me and one other and the kids so we were a family and that was always warmly welcomed. The scots were FAB!!!!!!!!!!! :-) I thought the UK my favourite place in all but its been 12 years since i've been and maybe their attitudes have done a 180 since then.
I found the dutch to love americans - never an issue. I did have problems with the French but they were rude to everyone so - nuff said.
Never made it to Italy....:-(
Belgium folks treated me and my family very kindly.
The only place I ever problem with people's attitudes were Germany.
-
My brother lived in Germany and from my understanding loved it. My mother was impressed with the very environment centered ergonomic culture.
The instances I am talking about were few, but impressionable, far more prevalent in Ireland. I never made it to Scotland. Wales was the most beautiful place I have ever seen. ever.
I long to travel to Italy, specifically Bagnoli where my ancestory is from.

Well said. :) However, I was not specifically talking about Iraq. There are other countries which America "occupied" because they wanted to bring "peace". :) I am not going to go into any details, though. :)
I think we've all experienced some sort of "racism" in the world. When I came to Canada, I was a "nasty" immigrant for a while who "could not speak English" (which is not the case because I spoke English better than some Canadian kids). Nowadays, I am not anymore because my accent has vanished and now I tell them that I am Canadian (if they ask). However, I do know how much hostility people in my country feel towards those who have immigrated. We were called traitors for a while. But I have experienced "racism" in my country too since I am a mix of three different nationalities - one of them despises the other. I was bullied by the kids there as I was bullied here.
I do not accept any of the wars USA has been in or any of the other countries. I believe in the freedom and peace as well as making peace by shaking hands. However, I hate when other countries think negatively as well as its people. We were born in this world together, so might as well help each other.
As far as the play goes, you can find these kinds of distasteful things anywhere in the world, not only in Europe. European art and theater (for anyone who has been there you would know this) is exceptional. However, there are idiots out there which think that offending someone is a great way to earn some money.
-
Your stories make a good point when taken together. generally those that claim they "heard" or saw certain things being said, that was because they themselves were either saying them or associated with a small group that felt as they did, which most tend to do.
I usually wave that away because a few that are like that does not speak for the majority.
-
sam-yea, germany as a country was really nice and their economy was spot on-they did take care of their people but sure did shun those who were mugbloods.

yes. yet when they needed us, they certainly smiled pretty and faked it well enough, didn't they?
Just as others that pretend because they need the US and yet whenever they can, they speak ill of us because they know, we will not turn our backs on someone in need, no matter how badly they behave.
-
I always got a kick out of driving on the Autobahn. Whenever they would see my USA sticker and the USA license tag, they just had to pass, no matter how fast I was going.
I spent 3 years in Nurnberg. Once away from town, the Germans were as friendly as can be. In town, they were as arrogant as any I met anywhere.
