Austin Teacher Arrested For Intent To Marry His Student

By Nikki Weingartner     Apr 10, 2008 in Crime
An Akins High School Spanish teacher and coach was arrested by Austin police after applying for a marriage license and trying to marry one of his students.
Ranulfo Arias, 27, was arrested by police in Austin after he and his 17-year-old student applied for a marriage license, according to a Texas news report. The girl’s mother consented to the marriage and accompanied the couple to the licensing department.
According to the student’s account, the couple had been sexually intimate and had been involved in a relationship since March.
It is against the law for an educator to have a romantic relationship with a student, sexual or otherwise, even if consensual. If convicted he faces up to twenty years imprisonment.
Arias bonded out on $5,000 USD after turning himself in on Monday, April 7, 2008 and is currently on administrative leave from the district.
