A 13 year old texas girl was attacked over a sign she made for a history class project requiring students to make a protest sign for or against an issue. She was told to return to class and was not allowed to call her parents after the incident!
As reported on KLTV, Melanie Bowers was brutally attacked because of a project she did for her history class. Students were supposed to pick an issue and make a protest sign supporting or opposing the issue of their choice. It doesn't take a fortune teller to know that such an exercise is bound to create controversy and conflict between opposing groups of students.
Her sign said "If you love our nation, sop illegal immigration". Somehow it got circulated during lunch and angered some latino students. She says she was attacked by a group of boys who put her in a choke hold, smashed her face into the brick walls and threatened to rape and kill her.
When she was finally let go and tried to report the attack, she says she was ordered to return to class and was not permitted to phone her parents. Her father, J.R. Bowers, said "They handled this wrong, you know, they put a child back in danger," said . "It was a very racially motivated crime."
A spokesman for the school district issued the following statement: "We have a camera system in the building." "We are collecting other information and statements from witnesses and this is all the information we have at this time."
