A mother who was afraid of her son leaving her kept him in a wheelchair for five years by feeding him medication for an ailment he never had.
The 31-year-old mother from Middlesbrough, England was sent to prison for four years after the court heard how she tricked doctors into prescribing medication for her boy.
The mother kept her in a wheelchair since he was three, according to Daily Mail.
She complained to the doctors that her son had regular fits and seizures and needed medication. The doctors couldn’t find exactly the exact medical problem but believed the mother and gave her medications. She also deceived her friends and family with the story.
She lived this lie for almost five years without others noticing it until one day she had to call the ambulance after she accidentally overdosed the boy on the medication.
The paramedics treated the boy and found the mother hiding some medication suspiciously and they called the police, who arrested her immediately.
Later, the mother confessed to a psychiatrist that she fabricated the story because she feared her son will leave her and become independent.
Judge Les Spittle from Teeside Crown Court didn’t feel any sympathy for her and sentenced her to four years in prison. He said to her the following during the sentencing phase:
"You robbed him (her son) of a normal childhood...It is fortunate that he has not suffered any long-term physical disability but I don't know what the potential long-term psychological impact there will be."
The boy is now 11 and doing fine, according to Daily Mail.
