According to Pingdom, the Web is now home to more than 162 million websites and growing. In1993, there were a mere 623 sites on the web.
The World Wide Web started in 1990 when Internet founder
Tim Berners-Lee created the first-ever website and web server (
this site).
The early part of the Internet saw growth among universities and government agencies and in 1993 there were only 623 sites. No doubt, Google would have no problem indexing these sites. In fact, there was no need for Google at that time, as local searches would suffice.
Then the Internet started to gain popularity and many companies and individuals started their own sites; in 1996
the Web reached 100,000 websites.
Here is the graph from 1990 to 2008, and you can see the staggering growth during the last 10 years.
Here is the same data list from December 1990 to January 1996:

If they add blogs to this list, the numbers are astronomical. Now you can find almost anything and everything on the Web, from shopping to social networking, to banking, to news, and much more.
Imagine life without the Web now?
