Tom Athans, husband of U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow Democrat from Michigan, was caught by police in a prostitution sting in Troy Michigan in February.
Tom Athans is a radio executive who heads TalkUSA Radio, based in Washington, D.C. He expressed his remorse on Wednesday after he was caught in the sting in February.
According to detnews.com
Athans said: "No words can fully express how sorry I am. At the time this incident occurred, I took responsibility for my actions and fully cooperated with law enforcement. My family and I are dealing with this matter in a personal and private way."
Undercover officers were investigating a possible prostitution ring in a hotel In Troy Mich. Athans had paid a 20 year old prostitute $150 for oral sex in the hotel. He was not arrested.
A room at a Residence Inn was under surveillance by the Troy officers. They saw Athans enter the room and leave 15 minutes later. He was followed by officers and was stopped not too far from the hotel.
The officers were told by Athans that he had met the female friend online at Craig's list and stopped by to see her after being given a room number.
After the woman took the $150 from the counter top where he had placed it she performed a sex act on him.
After officers entered the room they found $431 in cash, a laptop computer and condoms. She was arrested and identified as Alycia Lorraine Martin. She was charged with prostitution and released on $100 bond and is to appear for a pretrial hearing April 22 in Troy District Court.
Athans had cooperated with the officers and was told if the case goes to trial he will be called as a witness to testify and to identify the woman. He never told the officers that he was the husband of Debbie Stabenow.
According to freep.com Stabenow said the she is going through a "very difficult and personal time," but she states that she needs to keep her focus on her job in Washington.

What is going on with high profile people and prostitution rings these days. This is out of hand.

They keep getting caught but they keep on doing it.
-
As a Democrat, that may have been an innocent career move on his part.

Most of the time I think these guys are inescapable of thinking.

Stabenow is not saying what she is going to do. She said that they are working through it as a family.
It makes one wonder why these women stay with these cheating men.

I think it makes it worse as well. He has publicly humiliated her. Why would she stay?
-
It is hard to understand them staying with the cheating men as it has to be humiliating.
It is in the papers, on TV, on news sites.
For her while she works through her next step in her marriage she still has to try and stay focused on her job.

A marriage in that much trouble needs complete focus, how is she going to give both things the attention needed?
-
Due to my background, I never recoommend divorce. Most of these issues can be worked through - with lots of hard work.
The root cause of infidelity on either partners part can commonly be found in the relationship they don't have.
Dr. Emmerson Eggerichs has an excellent viewpoint , and it is one that my wife and I have used to teach Relationship 101 in our church. Even couples at the same degree of dysfunctionality as Sen Stabenow and her husband have remained together and put the relationship back on a different and healthier track.

It will be very difficult if not impossible to give both the attention that they need.

They both need to want to save the marriage and make it a better marriage.
Even in cases like this I am sure she will want to know has he done this before and how much can she trust him now.
You and your wife teach a marriage class in your church where I would be sure that those you help do believe in God and want to do what the Bible teaches.
I would hope that they can save their marriage and come out much stronger and devoted to each other and the marriage.
Thank you LCRW for sharing this you don't know much I appreciate it.

.
True, the classes are in a church. But the classes are open to all, and typically half (or sometimes more than half) the people have never or rarely been in a church before. They just happen to have a relationship which is in trouble, or just good, or is OK, but want something better.

I would hope if the classes help them that they would start attending a good church.
I would imagine that your church is a good one and possibly some would continue to attend there.

very very rarely
I see that as rather sad.
If a person or couple or family get involved in a good church I believe that helps them in many ways.
If the program is a part of the church's ministries or an outreach program it seems like it would be seen by those who get help to be beneficial to attend the church.

That is a normal reaction Cgull, but a guy getting a blowjob from a prostitute and his wife respons with" I am going to keep focus on my job" to me shows serious marital problems. Not that I condone his actions but he is probably not getting any at home if she is so focused on her career and not her marriage. We don't know the entire situation.

it is a ministry and outreach, and most who come from outside do the classes and go back to the lifestyle which put them in the class.

This is certainly troubling. It's like everyone is getting caught with their hands in the cookie jar...another sign of the times?
It saddens me to know that so few abide by their wedding vows anymore, nor do they believe that marriage is sacred. Although I have been married and divorced 3 times, I still believe in the sanctity of marriage.
Good story, Cynthia and equally good thread, as Susan said.

If in your class you encourage them to get involved in a good church and they don't probably 9 times out of 10 they will start having the same problems again.
Sad.

Thanks Deb and Susan.
Too bad that when people get married they BOTH don't take their wedding vows seriously.

No one knows what is causing his behavior but if they want to keep their marriage they obviously have some problems to work through.
