Wisconsin Church Destroyed In Gas Explosion

Details are just coming out about a gas explosion at the First Baptist Church in Oconomowoc. The building has severe damage and a house next to the structure is in flames. At least one other home was damaged.
The explosion took place at about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday afternoon. The entire downtown area could feel the shock waves.

"The church basically had disappeared and the only thing remaining was the steeple in the front," Waukesha County Board Supervisor Kenneth Herro said.


Construction crews had been working in the area prior to the explosion. It is thought that a service line was hit causing the blast.

There are possible injuries because of the explosion. the church is located in a residental area. The small town is located 30 miles west of Milwaukee. It has a population of 12,000.
