A 1-day-old newborn was taken from a secure hospital unit in Sanford, Florida this afternoon. A Jennifer Latham has been arrested and the baby has been recovered safely by the police.
The baby was wearing an alarm device which went off when the baby was taken out of the newborn unit and the hospital was put into a lock-down mode as security and the police searched the hospital for the abductor and the child.
It is unclear at this time how the abductor got the baby out of the hospital while it was under lock down.
Witnesses gave the police a description of a vehicle they saw leaving the hospital and about 3:00 p.m. a car fitting this description was pulled over in the nearby town of Lake Mary.
The car held the newborn and an unnamed women who was said to have been seen at the hospital during the incident and acting suspiciously earlier.
As told to
foxnews.com,
"It does appear that it could be a stranger abduction, which is very, very rare," as told by Darrel Presley, deputy chief of the Sanford Police Department near Orlando.
The police are still working to put all the facts together at this time.
The baby is said to be safe and sound with very relieved parents.
Update: A single woman, Jennifer Latham, acting alone is now being reported as the perpetrator in this abduction. It was earlier reported their were two women involved. It has now been found to be the one woman who changed her clothing to gain access to areas in the hospital.
Also it has been
reported that this was not her first attempt to take a child. Police say she had tried to take another baby but was thwarted in her attempt when questioned by that child's parents, she instead took the 1-day-old baby boy.
