The family of Carol Gotbaum filed $8 Million USD claim against the city of Phoenix, Arizona and its police department for use of "excessive and unreasonable force" and failure to follow police protocol. She accidentally hanged herself in police custody.
On September 28, Gotbaum was taken into custody after missing her connecting flight on her way to Tucson to enter an Alcohol Rehabilitation Facility and flying "into a rage", according to a news report.

The police handcuffed Gotbaum and left her alone, where she apparently tried to escape and died while doing so.

Gotbaum's husband had contacted the airport on the day she died and had informed them she was medically unstable.

The claim against the city of Phoenix is the first step in filing a wrongful death lawsuit.

Gotbaum was treated "as if she was a dangerous criminal, rather than as a sick, intoxicated and vulnerable person she was," it says. "She had no weapon and never threatened anyone."

Police state that they acted appropriately to the situation, as Gotbaum was resisting arrest and was erratic and screaming.

According to reports, she withheld any medically relevant information about her condition prior to her accidental hanging.

The officers left her cuffed and alone in a room for several minutes, where she continued to scream. She was found "unconscious" shortly after her screaming stopped.

Rescuers could not resuscitate her.

Carol was a mother of three and the step-daughter of New York public advocate, Betty Gotbaum.

I'm not sure how I feel on this. How many times do police leave people they've arrested in handcuffs and nothing's ever happened? Even had they known her mental/medical status...would they have left her alone? Too many questions...

This is incredibly tragic - no one should have left her alone...

Just from this limited report I can't see where it was the fault of the police.

The woman was in a rage and screaming, what were they supposed to do hold her hand and tell her that everything was going to be OK?

This was a woman who had a drinking problem - was drunk on the plane going to a rehab to get help for her drinking problem ALONE.......because the family KNOWINGLY wanted to keep it hidden, im sure.

Had they sent someone with her - a friend, anyone, this could have been dealt with much differntly.

Alcoholism is not an exuse for ABUSIVE behavior and resisting arrest - point in case.

This is a sad reality no matter if the death be a Polish immigrant, a naked guy hopped up on coke or a crazed lady hiding her alcoholism - they all shared a problem: extreme violence that affected others safety.

She hung herself in a tragic accident. I'm sure she was violent in the room so the left her. Had they TAZED her to subdue her, someone would be screaming out as well.
