Last Thursday morning, while a girl was walking to the bus stop, a man abducted her. For the next few hours, he sexually assaulted her and held her hostage in a vacant house. She managed to escape and the predator remains free. Today, school resumed... - This afternoon, outside of the North Tonawanda Middle School, many parents were waiting to pick up their children. Those children who didn't have parents waiting seemed to be walking in groups for safety.
The police and town's citizens had hoped that by this morning, the predator would have been caught. The lack of an arrest is keeping parents on edge.
"It's terrifying, and the fact that they haven't caught the guy is even scarier," says Krista Thompson, mother of a North Tonawanda Middle School student.
The police are still awaiting the results on the evidence collected at the crime scene. Hopes are there that the DNA will point to a suspect.
The child that was abducted from the bus stop was a 12-year old little girl.
"The little girl that that happened to is a very brave little girl, and our hearts go out to her and her family for what she's gone through," says Kara Hartman, another mother waiting for her child at the school on Tuesday afternoon."
Even though police have bumped-up patrols in the area, they remind parents that children should not be walking anywhere alone.

At this point, they've had to do something...I can't imagine sending my child to school alone or even in a group of children. I'd want to walk my child to/from school. -

No...quite the contrary. I AM one of those who was sexually assaulted as a child...and therefore my concern is making those kids safe from predators such as the one that is still on the lose. Communities can band together and have volunteer parents walk these kids to school take them to school...parents who don't have a job to get to the first thing in the morning. The reality is we live in a two-income per family world and there may be some concessions regarding care of our children, but one thing we can't compromise on is keeping ALL kids safe. -

I'm certain there is one behind every bush; so your lynch mob--er I mean safety patrol--will have to be a big one. Maybe if you can include retired people you can find enough to cover your town.
