A major earthquake hit China's Xinjiang and Xizang regions at about 6:30 a.m local time. The magnitude 7.2 quake is the most powerful one in almost six years to hit China.
A total of four quakes hit the region.
The quake hit where a third of the Chinese oil reserves are. The temblor was 37 kilometers deep according to the USGS. Three lesser quakes followed. The measurements for those were magnitude-5.3 aftershock, according to the USGS, magnitude 5.5 and magnitude 4.8.
There still are no reports of damages or casualties.
In 2003 a 6.4 magnitude earthquake hit 105 kilometers east of Kashi. 261 people died as a result of that natural disaster.
The last after shock also hit the region an hour later.
