In regards to the peace process that had taken place in Northern Ireland, United States Democratic co-frontrunner Senator Hillary Clinton of New York stands by the role she played in it.
After Super Tuesday, February 5, and Super Tuesday II, March 4, there has been no clear Democratic nominee. US Democratic co-frontrunner Senator Barack Obama of Illinois maintains his marginal lead over co-frontrunner Senator Hillary Clinton of New York in the pledged delegate count.
Obama and Clinton had sparred on health care, troop withdrawal, education, foreign policy, and many other topics. Recently, Obama had targeted Clinton’s credentials in regards to foreign policy. In the recent days, there was the issue of Clinton’s role in Northern Ireland.
While her husband Bill Clinton was United States President at the time, she had visited the country many times. Before the Good Friday Agreement back in 1998, the capital of Northern Ireland, Belfast, was the subject of various terrorist attacks by the group known as the Provisional Irish Republican Army(IRA).
Northern Ireland had attracted the attention of then-US President Bill Clinton. Hillary Clinton defended her role saying she played an instrumental part to the peace process in Northern Ireland.
“
I actually went to Belfast more than Bill did as part of what I was doing to help the process,” Clinton said in her defense.
Clinton said that she is still in contact with Northern Ireland.
However, Hillary Clinton’s role in Northern Ireland is still up for debate. John Hume, the former leader of the SDLP said she played a big role. However, David Trimble, the former leader of the UUP downplayed Hillary’s role towards being a mere cheerleader.
One question poses: How effective would the role of Northern Ireland’s peace process play in the campaign of Hillary Clinton?
