Researchers are keen to know the activities of wolves in Steuben County. New York's Steuben County is a popular area for deer hunting and there are plenty of deer to tempt a wolf's appetite. But how do the feral creatures affect the deer population?
WNY - Researchers are beginning a two year study on just what effect wolves have on deer. They are trapping, putting on a GPS collar and then releasing the wolves. This way, the animals can be tracked.

Eastern wolves are well established in New York, and are an integral part of our ecosystem. NYS Department of Environmental Conservation believes that humans and wolves can co-exist, if people maintain their natural fear of wolves.

The goal of SUNY's College of Environmental Science and Forestry researchers is to find out where the wolves go and how many deer the wolves are killing.

“Deer hunting is a very big part of New York's economy. That's a question they've been having over the years. It’s what are these coyotes doing,” says Robin Holevinski, a SUNY graduate student.

So far, the researchers have found that coyotes target severely wounded deer.
