article imagePublic Opinion Gives George Bush Credit for No Terror Attacks on the U.S. Since 2001

By Susan Duclos     Mar 13, 2008 in Politics
62 percent, of respondents to the Pew poll, say that George Bush and his administration's policies have had a great deal or a fair amount to do with the fact that there have been no terrorist attacks in the United States since 2001.
On a previous Digital Journal.com article, quoting the Pew Research Center Poll from February 20 to February 24, 2008, it was shown that public opinion of the progress being seen in Iraq has surged to a majority believing America will ultimately succeed.
In that same Pew poll, another interesting point was made and that is that despite low approval ratings for the United States of America President, George Bush, 62 percent of respondents credit the Bush administration's policies for preventing further terrorist attacks against the United States of America.
The chart below shows that when the question was asked about public opinion on what role Bush's policies have had on preventing terror attacks since 9/11/01, it shows that the majority credits him but a further breakdown by party affiliation as well as independents shows that, by and large, the public believes his anti-terror policies have kept the public safe.

Partisan breakdown:
90 percent of Republicans believe Bush's policies had a "great deal" or "fair amount" to do with no further attacks since September of 2001.
62 percent of independents give Bush's policies the same credit.
What would surprise many though is that 47 percent of Democrats also give Bush's policies' credit for preventing further attacks.
As Pew Research Center puts it, "Nonetheless, nearly half of Democrats (47%) say those policies have had at least a fair amount to do with the absence of attacks since 2001. A solid majority of conservative and moderate Democrats (56%) credits the administration's policies with preventing attacks, compared with just 37% of liberal Democrats. "
Bush holds very low approval ratings but these latest polls show that the American people, for the most part, are capable of separating individual issues and have the ability to give credit where they think it is due and they are giving credit for preventing terror attacks on American soil since 9/11, by a clear majority, to George Bush's administration's policies.
