Top GOP Lawmaker To Introduce Impeachment, Gov. Spitzer Works On Resignation Plan

by Can Tran.
In the wake of the scandal of New York Governor Eliot Spitzer and a high-priced prostitution ring, legislative staffer says that Spitzer plans to resign. At the same time, a Republican lawmaker plans to start impeaching Spitzer by Thursday.
Recently, federal prosecutors have connected New York Democratic Governor Eliot Spitzer in connection to a high-priced prostitution ring. A top legislative staffer who is deemed an anonymous source explains that the aides to both Gov. Eliot Spitzer and Lt. Gov. David Paterson have worked on a resignation plan and transition.

Many Republicans have called forth for Spitzer to resign from office. Spitzer had given his endorsement and support to Democratic presidential frontrunner Hillary Clinton. It is unknown what effect the scandal will have on Clinton’s campaign. During the wake of the scandal, Spitzer gave a vague apology. However, he did not mention anything about resigning.

Sources say that Spitzer had spent over $15,000 on prostitutes.

Assemblyman James Tedisco, the Republican leader of New York’s Assembly said that he would move to introduce articles of impeachment against Spitzer if he did not resign from office.

It’s not something we rejoice in; it’s nothing political,” Tedisco said saying to CNN's Wolf Blitzer. He adds: “It’s what’s right and what’s wrong.”

However, the there is a possible historical moment that can come out from the scandal. If and when Spitzer resigns, then Lt. Gov. Paterson will be taking his place until the term ends in 2010. Paterson would be New York’s first black governor. He would be the fourth black governor in United States history. Paterson would be the third United States governor after the Reconstruction.

Paterson is legally blind. However, the disability has not hindered his job performance. In dealing with his blindness, Paterson neither replies on a guide dog nor a walking stick. He is also well respected amongst both Democrats and Republicans.

While a historical moment for New York can come out of this, this incident could possibly strike a blow to Clinton's campaign.
