Students trekking across Europe have always been able to save money by bedding down in a hostel along the way. Times have changed and with time hostels have too. They now offer their rooms to families trying to vacation at a fraction of the cost.
With more families on the go hostels are now offering family specials that cater to the littlest members on the road. With British hotels that play for the tyke squad costing over 200 pounds hostels offer an alternative at roughly 36 pounds a night.

Two thirds of the Youth Hostel Association's 200 British and Welsh hostels are geared up to give families a private room some even featuring ensuite loos.

One of these hostels is Abbey House at Whitby with fantastic views of Whitby Abbey's ruins and free access into them saving a family of four an additional 10.50 pounds.

One family who stayed there had a spotless room with pine furniture and ensuite. While costs are kept down with not providing towels and soap the cost makes that not a problem. The beds of course are bunks, not suitable for a romantic stay but with little kids in tow romance is often not an objective.

The hostel also offers up use of the kitchen and plastic panniers to store your stock within.

Another hostel that the family stayed at was Hartington Hall built in the 17th century. This bustling hostel was filled to the brim with other families. It was easy to see why with games rooms stocked up, large lawns, a small zoo and great customer service. Rooms are small but the 10 pound restaurant made up for it with its great food. You do pay more for this treasure, up to 84 pounds during peak seasons, although that is under half of the hotel scene. Next month the hostel will even be providing bedding for its clients.
