In late 2007, guitarist Neal Schon from the rock band "Journey" was trolling Youtube looking for new talent. He came across a young Filipino cover band that played Journey songs. The rest is history. You have to hear this to believe it.
As 2007 came to a close, Neal Schon, legendary guitarist of the band Journey, was at his home browsing around Youtube looking for new talent.
"I was frustrated about not having a singer," explains guitarist Neal Schon, "so I went on YouTube for a couple of days and just sat on it for hours." reports that after looking for hours, Neal came across a cover band from the Philippines called "The Zoo". The band of young musicians played cover songs in local area venues and had decided to upload some of their live videos to
Schon says of his experience, "After watching the videos over and over again, I had to walk away from the computer and let what I heard sink in because it sounded too good to be true. I thought, 'he can't be that good.' But he is that good, he's the real deal and so tremendously talented."
He decided to immediately contact the group and try to get in touch with the singer who lived 1/2 way around the world.
The singer, Arnel Pineda says of the contact, "My friend Noel picked up the message on YouTube and told me it was from Neal. I thought it was a hoax so I ignored it. Noel said, 'what if it really was Neal and he wanted to offer you the chance of a lifetime?' So I e-mailed Neal back and the rest is history."
Pineda flew to the U.S. to audition for the band and after playing through a few live songs and recording two demos he learned that he had the job. Journey, with new singer Arnel Pineda are now in the studio working on a 2008 release with plans for a worldwide tour.
It just goes to show how much the Web is impacting and changing our lives on a daily basis. This connection, created via YouTube is amazing and when you hear Pineda's voice you can almost feel the excitement Neal Schon must have felt that night... I mean, he sounds SO much like Steve Perry that it's scary.
What's interesting is how different his speaking voice is compared to his singing voice. When he speaks his voice is small and his English is broken, but when he belts out a Journey classic, his voice becomes huge, his Filipino accent disappears and he sounds as American as, well, Journey.
