Voters in Brattleboro and Marlboro approved a measure instructing police to arrest President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney for “crimes against our Constitution.” The nonbinding, symbolic act is characteristic of liberal Vermont.
The state, home to maple syrup, is known for its liberal politics, especially when it comes to national issues. The measures tells police “to extradite them to other authorities that may reasonably contend to prosecute them.”
In the past, Vermont’s lawmakers have passed resolutions to end the war in Iraq and impeach both Bush and Cheney. Several towns have also passed impeachment measures. However, none of these has occurred.
Vermont has never been graced with a visit from President Bush, and this recent resolution makes it pretty sure he never will visit. He often spends family vacations in Maine.
Some 12,000 people live in Brattleboro, located in the southeastern corner of the state on the Connecticut River. Marlboro is nearby with a population of 1,000.
