Abbas suspends contact with Israel

By Fortunesfool     Mar 2, 2008 in World
As the death toll from the latest Israeli attack on Israel enters three figures and tensions increases, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has suspended contact with Israel..
His decision comes amid heightening tensions across the region with angry demonstrations and clashes between Palestinians and Israeli troops in the West Bank. A spokesman for Mr Abbas blamed Israel for the suspension of the talks, restarted after the conference Annapolis last November, saying that in light of Israel's aggression they were "meaningless".
However, there is little sign that Israel intends to halt it's operations. Israeli PM Ehud Olmert has vowed to carry on the assault, which came in response to rocket attacks on Israel. Last week Israel's deputy defence minister, Matan Vilnai, said Israel will have 'no choice' but to invade Gaza if Palestinian militants continue launching rocket attacks. He sparked controversy by warning the Palestinians that they risked a "shoah", the Hebrew word for commonly used to describe the Nazi Holocaust.
International calls for restraint may well be falling on deaf ears in Israeli governmental circles but the Israeli people seem more willing to offer an olive branch. The Guardian reported a new poll which found 64% of Israeli's want it's government to open talks with Hamas.
