Facebook is planning a redesign of their profile pages to stay above their competition by attempting to regain a clean and tidy look while keeping third-party applications on the site.
According to Facebook's developer blog, they are currently planning another major redesign of the website. The redesign is intended to reduce clutter.
If you are a regular Facebook user, you likely have noticed the pages have become messy, the news feed is cluttered and pages take more time to load. The reason behind all of this is because of third-party applications that were added to Facebook when they opened up to other developers. Although there are some third-party applications that are useful, they have become a burden for some that stride on a clean system.
The problem primarily stems from the social networking site taking the correct design approach when they opened up to the new applications last year. They stood still with the same design of Facebook profiles and decided third-party developers could just add to what was already there.
The new design promises to go back to a simpler, tidy look much like how the site used to be one year ago, but with the third-party applications intact. In order to fulfill this, Facebook may be expanding the look of the iPhone version of their site into the profile pages and moving third-party application onto a new tab.
The new design has been promised to be implemented in the next couple of months. It should make Facebook users happier with the subtle changes. However, developers for Facebook may react negatively to changes because it reduces their visibility on profile pages and reduces the page views for their applications dramatically.
