Attorney general Larry Long says that an email scam involving "hired killers" is making rounds on the Internet. Investigators have already received more than five complaints about the email in the past week.
Attorney general Larry Long said that the latest scam is a straightforward attempt by con artists to exploit people with fear.

The e-mail warns people to not contact the police and the email claims to be a threat from a hired killer. The message than continues to say that the victim can stop his or her own murder by wiring a specific amount of money to the sender.

Long said that people should not respond to the email and that if anyone is worried about suspicious e-mails than they can contact the FBI or forward the emails to the state's consumer protection division.

According to the attorney's general's office, there are two other scams that have surfaced in email and on lookalike Internal Revenue Service websites.

One email claims that you are eligible for a refund or that your tax return will be audited. When people click on the link provided, they are sent to a website that looks like the IRS web site but it's a fake.

The second scam involves lookalike IRS web sites that ask for information such as bank account numbers or Social Security numbers.

These scams seem to surface a lot more around this time of the year due to the oncoming tax season.

People who threaten to kill people need to be found and imprisoned. This is much worse than just scamming for money. Some people aren't that smart and it's horrible that they could be scared and duped. We should be grateful that we've got enough on the ball not to be taken in by something like this.

DR-u r right about the scared and duped aspect. It does extend beyond money BUT people will do ANYTHING to scam as long as there are willing participants. It goes with abuse....it should be reported, not given into. Bullying.....reported, not given into.

ABUSERS prey on the easy, weak, vulnerable. Those of us who didn't participate weren't good prey. Those who did......easy prey.

On the web, who stops these creeps?

Where is the line of interprise drawn?

Does the user have an obligation to turn on spam blockers?

So many buckets of shite that muddy the pond.

I can't say I'd be scared at this point. At one time, maybe, but not any more. These days I'd be more inclined to tell them that they're more than welcome to come after me, but they'd better be a quicker and more accurate shot than me, and more heavily armed.

I stepped back from certain activities that I was involved in once, years ago, when someone sent me in an email my license plate number and my address, out of concern for my kids. Now that I'm divorced several years down the road and the kids don't live with me, it's a whole different ball of wax.

And I have a MUCH bigger attitude problem than I did back then...hehe.

Mr. T used to say, "I pity the fool..." I can certainly relate :)

    Great article :)

I hear you on that score, Mike! Age has a way of making us more opinionated and less afraid of idiots out there!

I've been getting a lot of crap in my junk folders but this is a new one...which will get deleted long before I open it to read what's inside!
