Doris Lessing, aged 88, who won the 2007 Nobel Literature Prize told Stockholm press that it would probably be a much better thing if Hillary Clinton were to become president. Her reasoning? Obama, as a black man, would more than likely be shot if elected
According to Lessing, Obama, who is vying to become the first black president in the history of the United States
"would certainly not last long, a black man in the position of president. They would murder him."

She went on to say that it would be better if Hillary Clinton were to become president, and suggested that they run together.
"The best thing would be if they (Clinton and Obama) were to run together. Hillary is a very sharp lady. It might be calmer if she were to win, and not Obama."

Born in Persia (now Iran) and raised in what is now Zimbabwe, Lessing drew on her experiences in colonial Africa for her debut novel, "The Grass Is Singing," published in 1950. Her most influential book is probably "The Golden Notebook," published in 1962 and considered a feminist classic.

The author of more than 50 novels, volumes of short stories, memoirs and plays, Lessing was announced as the 2007 Nobel Literature laureate in October. The Swedish Academy, which awards the $1.5 million prize, praised her "skepticism, fire and visionary power."

Lessing has long been known for her fierce and often contrary opinions.

Do you agree with her assessment? I personally have had other friends and associates tell me the exact same thing. They firmly believe that racism in this country is alive and well, and the election of a black man would only result in his subsequent demise.

Wow, what a comment about the United States of America ...
They firmly believe that racism in this country is alive and well, and the election of a black man would only result in his subsequent demise.
And there I was looking at polls just yesterday that showed that more people would vote for a black man than a white woman. What gives? Statements like these completely baffle me and not only that, they scare the hell out of me.

Honestly, I think Lessing is right. The USA may be more able to handle a woman President than a black one. Racism is alive and well...we see it more than we think we do.

I agree. I have watched alot of specials on cable about the KKK and the Skinheads - those that are all about "white power" - and believe me, they are alive and well. They are sick and twisted individuals, but they exist in big numbers. I would think that Obama's wife would be scared to death that if her husband is elected he will not live to see his full term in office.

From what I've read, it seems that the Obama's are quite aware of the possiblity, however how can anyone live a full life if they allow fear to stand in their way?

I think that most people expect that Obama would be assassinated simply because he's black. Only if he didn't suffer that fate would the rest of the world know that racism is not alive and well in America, and that would prove that Americans have certainly come out of the dark ages.

The only way we will know is if he does win the Presidency. I know we're ready for a change...but how much will depend on the people of the USA.

I'd love nothing better than to see this prediction proven wrong and that my belief that racism is alive and well be proven wrong as well.

It's possible that could happen but I pray that it doesn't if indeed Obama is elected president.

Yeah, it's rather disheartening when it seems that it's not so much of a "prediction" inasmuch as it is something rather to be expected.

There is always the grim and realistic possibility that the President of the US can be assassinated. It will continue to be so given the extreme emotions surrounding the current slate of candidates.

    The republicans hate Hilary.
    The bigots hates Barack.
    The democrats hate republicans.

Will the threat be a more significant possibility for BO than for the current President, I don't know.

Her logic is weak but that doesn't mean it will happen. There is racism, but has improved a lot, but still a long way to go. I see too many groups, they have same views but have hatred feelings.
