The epitome of good taste, The Westboro Baptist Church, has started a site in keeping with their decorative godhatesfags and godhatesamerica sites. This is because Heath Ledger played a homosexual in a movie.
Australia is somehow managing to live with this terrible indictment.
Actually, Westboro might become very popular here, now that we’ve learned how to make bets on the sheer insanity and poor taste.
Anything resembling a sentient statement is currently at odds of 1000/1, but at those odd you do get a few punters.
An accurate quote of scripture, in context with anything, is at 10,000/1, and
The slightest decency to a family who’ve lost their child is at 2,000,000 to 1 with no takers.
It’s a matter of opinion what this organization actually achieves. The world doesn’t seem to be noticeably a better place due to their presence, but perhaps there’s more to it.
Let’s try a bit of analysis.
Characteristics:
1. Total lack of respect for the law and rights of others.
2. Repeated and continual use of human misery as an excuse for publicity.
3. The mere fact that the group persists in its activities, long after the rest of the world has clearly indicated that it doesn’t give a damn what the Westboro Baptist Church thinks, might indicate a lack of sensitivity.
The group’s compulsive use of scripture for its own purposes is interesting. Particularly since it involves making so many judgments based on a religion which actually demands people not be judgmental. Although I’d say the bit about not casting stones probably didn’t get into their version of the Bible.
The Daily Telegraph has the story here of WBC’s latest foray into moral masturbation. This bit is fairly interesting, given the homo-hatred:
Church spokesman Jonathan Phelps said in an interview with The Daily Telegraph Online that Heath Ledger was burning in hell - and kept referring to gays as "fags'' throughout the whole interview.
But apparently that's all right with him because "fag is a legitimate Bible word''.
Phelps said Ledger, who wasn't gay, is actually "worse'' than a real homosexual.
"The same god that said thou shall not kill said thou shall not lie with mankind as with womankind, it is abomination,'' Phelps said.
Where, in the Bible, is that line?
And you couldn’t "lie with mankind as with womankind", even if you wanted to.
It's physically impossible. If that expression even exists, it would have to be the other way round to be any reference to homosexuality.
That line, if it exists at all, isn’t one of the commandments, anyway.
“Fag” doesn’t exist in any version of either Testament, for the very good reason that the meaning of the modern use of the word didn’t exist all those thousands of years ago.
Another good quote, just to prove the Christian credentials:
"Matthew 5:19 says ... that is compassion, to warn our fellow man and fellow Australians to not go where he went - to hell, that is the ultimate form of compassion, as Jesus Christ defined it," he said.
As a matter of fact, Matthew 5:19 doesn’t say anything of the sort.
This is the King James version:
19 Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
Let’s sort out a couple of things here:
1. This is not a form of Christianity being preached by WBC.
2. These are not decent people.
Just one spiritual quote for WBC to try and comprehend:
“Thou shalt not bear false witness.”
