Op-Ed: Thieves Give Back Part of Victims' Money

House and Senate majority leaders announced today that they had reached bi-partisan agreement with the White House on an economic stimulus package. The question that is being asked is how, exactly, the $145 billion package will benefit individuals.
I love when the government starts talking about giving people money. I LOVE the concept of this freshly hatched "stimulus package" to boost the economy. I especially love it when government plays Robin Hood and tries to convince everyone that it's a good thing, especially when it comes to $145 billion of taxpayer money.

Under the plan, as many as 117 million people would get rebate checks. Individual income tax filers would receive up to $600, working couples would get up to $1,200, and those with children would get an additional $300 per child.

"First and foremost, the stimulus package will put money in the hands of hardworking Americans," Pelosi told a Capitol Hill news conference. "This is a middle-class initiative to strengthen the middle class and to those who aspire to be in the middle class. It will be in the form of tax rebates and a child tax credit."

Right. We're supposed to think that $300 a head is going to strengthen the middle class? Bolster the economy? THIS WAS YOUR MONEY TO BEGIN WITH, AMERICA!

It blows my mind how that we allowed, as a nation, President Woodrow Wilson to totally and completely disregard the United States Constitution by empowering the Federal Reserve Bank to be the authority over our nation's economy. It further blows my mind how that our nation willing AMENDED the Constitution to include the income tax in 1913. Of course, I suppose I shouldn't really be surprised, after all, that was the era that gave birth to the Bolshevik movement, which was alive and well in American politics and economics as much then as it is today.

"From each according to his means, to each according to his needs."

Never have bought that, because it means that someone else determines what my needs are. That's MY call, not the call of someone else. Especially not someone in the government.

Take a moment, if you will, and consider the things you pay taxes on: income taxes, inheritance taxes, capital gains taxes, wheel taxes, property taxes, sales taxes, gift taxes, luxury item taxes, tobacco and alcohol taxes, firearms and ammunitions taxes, death taxes (yes, you can be taxed for dying), business taxes, fuel taxes, (in Tennessee) entertainment taxes...

ENTERTAINMENT TAXES?

I THOUGHT that this nation rebelled against England over taxes, did we not? Wasn't there a party in Boston Harbor involving tea? "No taxation without representation" has become "I am your representative, and I'm going to pay lip service to making sure you aren't overly taxed."

If Congress and the White House TRULY want to benefit the American people and promote true economic stimulation, they should begin working on eliminating government wastes, earmarks, pork projects, and begin working towards repealing the 16th amendment, or at least coming up with something that isn't overburdening any ONE segment of the American public.

Because the middle class is getting hosed. They always do.

Let me give the rest of you a little advice for what to do with your economic stimulus checks, when you get them. Are you listening? Look around and make sure no one is eavesdropping, this is going to be our little secret, okay? Take that money that the government is sending to you and go straightaway to the financial institution of your choice and invest it, or at least a portion of it, into an account where it will make you more money...

And then call your Congressman and tell them THANK YOU for playing Robing Hood with other people's money, stealing from the American People and then giving a little back so we all "feel good."

AND THEN, next time your representatives come up for reelection, DON'T DO IT. Put someone else in their office and demand that they work for the people, not for bigger government.

Oh yes, and one more twist of the blade. Some will be getting money back who don't pay INTO the income tax system...

Economic incentive my leathery arse.

    The government GIVES us money.
The government PAYS for all kinds of things to "help" people and many times these people should be working and caring for themselves.

Where do all these people think the money comes from? Do they see the government as some kind of self-sufficient organization?

    Excellent OP/ED Mike.

Cynthia I know how crude this sounds but it is the only way to express my frustration with that excellent point you just made.

I sometimes think these people imagine that we all can just shit out money!!!!

    It magically just appears.

    Night everyone!

I'm sure the folks over at the Federal Reserve are excited about this "stimulus" package, as all it does is drive our country deeper into debt, and they just sit back and collect the interest on the ever growing deficit in this country.

This is just a total joke and will do absolutely nothing to stimulate anyone's bottom line but the private individuals that are the "Federal Reserve"......unfortunately the majority of the sheepl don't have a clue.

Keep those printing presses rolling. And don't worry about that nasty word inflation......well atleast not until a loaf of bread costs 30.00 and then everyone will shake their collective heads and say "What the heck? What happened here?"

This stimulus package is only going to compound the problem down the line. We are collectively being screwed by the government that we elected to represent us. Are they really seriously just dumb or what?

In my way of thinking, it's the old Roman "bread and circuses" ploy.

Jon Stewart said it best tonight when he compared the stimulus package to rich dudes who just say, "Hey, sorry I ran over your cat in my Rolls. Howzabout I pay you a few bucks and we can forget this ever happened? Whadya say?"

It's insulting when the feds think the citizens will just be easily pacified with a payout. The U.S. public shouldn't stand for this kind of disrespect, but I guess the big question is, "Then what's the alternative?"

The alternative is to forget the whole thing.

This is an obvious pre-election ploy to show the people that the pols care.

    HORSE DROPPINGS!

The economy is running strong and if the government pukes would stay out of it and let the cycles run their course, it would balance itself out as it always does anyway.

The economy grows and the economy shrinks all by its little lonesome no matter what the government tries to do. All government "intervention" does in the economy does is delay the inevitable anyway...just like diplomacy.

When I get my little tiny check in JUNE, I will mail it back in little pieces.

I know that it isn't going to help the economy in the long term but a check is a check. I accept it and say thank you.

I disagree that the "economy is running strong"

This payoff money will do nothing but make matters worse, driving up the already massive national debt.

And as far as your comment that when you get your check in June you'll mail it back in "little pieces" - I doubt it. You'll keep it, just like everyone else will.

Good Op/Ed and good follow-up comments!

According to our local news, checks could hit as early as May.

I suppose the alternative is not getting a check, however insignificant, so I'll take the money and run. Though I think I'll follow Mike's advice to invest it rather than actually using it to stimulate the economy.

Then again, maybe I'll get a Wii. :)

Doubt all you want to but I did the exact thing the last time the crooks sent me a snippet of my money that they stole from me originally.

I don't need it and I don't want it and I don't accept the hidden agendas thereof.

Does anyone consider the costs involved in the MAILING of 117M checks? Besides the postage costs, think of how many trees died to generate 117M checks.

This whole "economic stimulus" package is not only not required, it is an insult...people waiting for the government hand-out because that is what this is - a handout.

The economy is running strong and the woe is me indignant stupidity of the Drive By Media and their moppets have created a crisis that is not a crisis.

What we are witnessing is normalcy...cycles run their coarse plain and simple.

Less than 5% unemployment nationwide is practically ZERO unemployed. Single digit mortgage rates for this long is just shy of a miracle. Vast growth in the economy since 91101 is largely ignored because the socialists MUST invent issues that appeal to the emotionally weak.

This issue is a contrived issue for votes.

Well said Mike. Appropriate title. I'm a Canadian who pays plenty of taxes, especially on income. Don't feel so bad, our government does the same kind of candy dangling, especially right before an election.

If the MORONS in House and Senate would think with their Heads .. JOB CREATION results in recovery via CUTTING CORPORATE TAXES which will stop the bleding of American jobs being shifted over seas.. Example is MICHIGAN who has the most ( non Nature forced unemployment in the country) whose State Goovernment is so inept that it is Raising taxes and Forcing Companies to move plants and Jobs and Population out of state... Giving more NON peramanent tax rebates is akin to putting aband aid on a broken leg.... money may go towards Japanese TV,s and Chinese Toys and Not Help to solve the HOUSE Mortgage nor the OIL Issues which are at the CORE of the PROBLEM... a PHONY SOLUTION to REAL NEEDS>>>
