Thompson Drops Out of Republican Presidential Race

by Emily January.
Former Tennessee Senator Fred Thompson has dropped out of the Republican presidential race today. His announcement comes after not placing well in any primary and caucus contests.
He said, “Today, I have withdrawn my candidacy for president of the United States. I hope that my country and my party have benefitted from our having made this effort.”

The announcement from the Law & Order actor comes after he finished third in South Carolina, a state he needed to win in order to boost his campaign.

Thompson did not endorse any of the other candidates. In 2000, however, he did support Arizona Senator John McCain for the party nomination.

The not surprising announcement marks a new step in the quest for presidential nominations. More such moves may come as other primaries and caucuses help to decide the front runner for both the democrats and republicans.
