Amnesty International Urges Iran To Stop Death By Stoning

The nation of Iran has been urged by Amnesty International to drop from its penal code the death sentence by stoning. Death by stoning is a fate that is awaiting 11 convicted criminals according to the group.
The British-based group called Amnesty International has called
stoning people to death as a horrific practice. The group says that stoning is designed to increase suffering of those who had been condemned. Iran is one of the countries in the world with a high rate of execution.
Since 2002, at least three people were stoned for adultery which is a crime in Iran. This comes despite a moratorium. Amnesty International says that the majority of those sentenced to death are women.
Those that campaign against the death penalty explain that this method of execution is harsh. The penal code has the stipulation that the stones must be large enough to cause condemned criminals pain but not sufficient to kill the person immediately.
Amnesty International has highlighted the case of condemned woman Mokarrameh Ebrahimi. The father of her children was stoned to death in July of 2007. Both children were born out of wedlock.
Jafar Kiani was still executed regardless of the moratorium on executions by stoning. Ms. Ebrahimi along with eight other women faces a similar and painful fate.
