MySpace.com has announced it will work with 45 states in the U.S. to develop strong measures to curb the activities of sexual predators. MySpace will allow independent monitoring of its site and develop age-verification technology.
MySpace.com has faced severe criticism in the past when there were several cases of predators interacting with young victims very easily on the site. Now MySpace has
agreed to work with 45 States in the U.S. to develop measures that will help prevent sexual predators from visiting the site.
State governments and MySpace.com will develop age-verification technology along with several online protection measures. MySpace.com also will allow independent monitoring and changes to the structure of its site to protect its young members.
The agreement will be announced today in Manhattan by attorneys general from New Jersey, Connecticut, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York and North Carolina. Most probably the laws will reflect the current policy for sexual predators who are not allowed to get in touch with children or young adults in public.
As AP reports:
"The attorneys general have been seeking greater controls for online networking sites to prevent sexual predators from using those sites to contact children."
There was no comment from MySpace.com, a unit of News Corp.
In my opinion, this should be an agreement with all social networking sites, not just MySpace. And no matter how much technology is put in place, I believe there will always be a risk and predators can always find ways to break the rules. Parents need to teach their kids.
That said, I do think this is a good start. Other Social sites such as Facebook, Bebo and Yahoo 360 should also have similar control measures in place.
