On Friday, the citizens of Baghdad witnessed a sight that most of them had never seen…snow! War weary residents joyfully looked upon this unusual weather event as an omen of peace for their beloved country.
As reported in Reuters: The temperature hovered near freezing and the snow melted quickly after hitting the ground. Still, the snow brought momentary joy and a renewed sense of optimism to those who witnessed it.
60-year-old Hassan Zahar said:
"It is the first time we've seen snow in Baghdad."… "We've seen sleet before, but never snow. I looked at the faces of all the people, they were astonished."
He continued:
"A few minutes ago, I was covered with snowflakes. In my hair, on my shoulders. I invite all the people to enjoy peace, because the snow means peace."
Murtadha Fadhil, a traffic cop, called the snow:
"a new sign of the new Iraq." "It's a sign of hope. We hope Iraqis will purify their hearts and politicians will work for the prosperity of all Iraqis."
A local baker, Mohanned Rahim, summed it up saying:
"This snow will bring pleasure to the people of Iraq. It's beautiful!"
