After fourth place finishes in the Iowa caucuses and the New Hampshire primary, New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson will quit the Democratic presidential nomination race. Not that he ever had a chance to win, anyway.
Richardson's showing in Iowa and New Hampshire were weak, to say the least. He drew 5% of the vote last night in the Granite State and 2% in Iowa, far behind the three heavy hitters - Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and John Edwards.
As with any election, it all comes down to the numbers. Richardson was never expected to draw a large number of voters, and single digits in both Iowa and New Hampshire sealed his fate.
A Democratic strategist close to Richardson's campaign told
CNN the end is near.
"The numbers are the reason — not enough votes and not enough money. He enjoyed it and believes he made a contribution," the strategist said.
An announcement is expected Thursday from New Mexico.
Another potential candidate has exited to the sidelines. Thanks for coming out, Bill.
