Exit polls reveal that six out of every ten independents opted for the Democratic contest. Amongst those independents, Barack Obama was leading among them.
One third of those that voted in the Republican primaries were independent. McCain had a trailing lead ahead of Mitt Romney. However, Romney beat McCain by thirty-eight percent by those who called themselves conservative.
In the case of Mike Huckabee, there were fewer voters who were Evangelical Christians which makes up his strongest group of supporters. Romney had also beaten Huckabee amongst conservative voters.
