article imageMan Shot Dead At The Wheel Of His Car

By Michelle Duffy     Jan 6, 2008 in Crime
Police tonight are left puzzled after a man was murdered with a single gun shot through the windscreen of his Land Rover whilst he drove along a street in Merseyside, in the north of England. It is thought that the incident was a "targeted attack"
The 35 year old man, who has not yet been identified, had been driving his gold Land Rover through the town of Halewood, in Merseyside, just south of Liverpool last night. The car had been traveling along Mackets Lane, when a single gun shot was fired at the Land Rover, through the windscreen and killing the driver immediately. He was later found with a shot wound in the head.
As the shot was fired, the driver lost control and crashed the Land Rover into a passing Ford Focus travelling in the opposite direction. The 36 year old male driver of the Ford was not hurt badly, although he is thought to be in a state of shock. He is also thought not to have any connection with the shooting.
Merseyside police want to rule out an suspicion of the killing being a random attack, however, they are keeping an open mind about the motive for the murder.
So far, the road where the incident took place has remained closed for further police investigation. Leading the investigation is Chief Superintendent John Young, he told BBC News Website,
"There is a gun crime problem, but it's something we're working very hard to eradicate."
He went on,
"We don't think that it is a random shooting. At this moment in time I wouldn't really want to speculate as to the motive, but it certainly doesn't appear to be random. Our firearms officers say they couldn't attempt to shoot someone like that. We don't think it's been an expert gunman."
Police are hoping there will be a number of witnesses who will be able to help the police with their enquiries. There has, thankfully, images captured of the incident on local CCTV cameras. This film should be able to give police a better insight as to what happened on Saturday night in the area. Although the shooting in the area , which is predominately residential, has alarmed many residents, police have told them that they are not to feel threatened.
