Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is sending a top diplomat to Kenya in an effort to talk with both the opposition leader and the president with the hope that steps will betaken to end the violence.
The United States Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is planning to send a top level diplomat for Africa, Jendayi Frazer, to Kenya.
The purpose is to hold talks with both opposition leader Raila Odinga and President Mwai Kibaki in an effort to make progress toward resolving Kenya's political crisis says an AllAfrica
report.
"What you can do at this point is really meet with each side, see where they are, [and] take an assessment of where they stand," said Sean McCormack, the State Department's spokesperson.
Rice has talked with both parties over the telephone recently and urged them to work towards stopping the violence. McCormack has stated that Rice feels that it was important for Frazer to deliver the United States' call for dialogue directly to the political leaders.
The Kenyan government has expressed no interest in international mediation. Archbishop Desmond Tutu is in Kenya and has held a meeting with Odinga, but it is unclear whether he has met with Kibaki yet.
