Conservation Officers Going Green
by Debra Myers.
New York State Conservation Officers are going green in an effort to protect themselves and the environment from furthered lead exposure. The "green" bullets are are made by Federal Ammunition and will replace the leaded bullets they use during training.
Albany, NY - More than 150,000 rounds of ammunition are fired, mostly for training by D.E.C. officers every year.
The
AP says that now, in an effort to reduce lead exposure to officers that work out of the D.E.C., (both conservation and forestry) will be using "green" ammunition made by "Federal Ammunition" called
"BallistiClean."
BallistiClean brand bullets are lead free and the core now is made out of
"a combination of zinc, tin, tungsten, copper or nylon". This eliminates airborne lead particles and helps to reduce
"barrel fouling".
The bullets break-up immediately upon impact which reduces ricochet or back-splash dangers. On the head of the bullet is a "NT" (non-toxic) stamp so that they can be recognized easily. The ammunition meets both EPA and OSHA standards.
As well, using these bullets will save the environment. It will cut down on lead in storm water runoff from the shooting ranges and it will be less expensive to clean up.
The officers will continue to use lead ammunition while they are on duty however.
