George and Leslie Brock are celebrating. The couple went out to eat at Lake Worth's Dave's Last Resort and Raw Bar on Friday ordering up some steamed clams. George took a bite into a hard clam and discovered a rare iridescent purple pearl.
The rare pearl is worth thousands. They are only found in large New England quahogs. Quahogs are known for their violet coulouring in the inside of their shells. According to the restaurant manager, Tom Gerry the clams came from Apalachicola in the Florida Panhandle.
The Brocks of Royal Palm Beach plan to have their treasure appraised. If it is indeed as valuable as they have been told they may sell it.
"Few are round and few are a lovely colour, so this is rare," said gemologist Antoinette Matlins. "I think they have found something precious and lovely and valuable."
The clam dinner was $10. Looks like the Brocks got a late Christmas gift.
