Former Prime Minister of Pakistan Benazir Bhutto died in the hospital while undergoing surgery after a terrorist attack during a rally. Reports are conflicting as to how she was killed.
Benazir Bhutto (1953-2007) an opposition leader in Pakistan is confirmed dead at 6:16 pm. Bhutto was attack at a rally in the outer province of Rawalpindi by a suicide bomber and some accounts say there was also gun fire. A government official claims she was shot in the neck.
Bhutto was reported to have been in transit to the hospital for half an hour while a misinformation campaign raged claiming she was alright. She did escape the bomb blast only to be killed by an assassin as her car sped away.
The twice former Prime Minister was demanding Musharraf and the government of Pakistan hold fair and honest elections to further democracy. Each time she held office she was dismissed for supposed corruption. She was said to have been friendly with the West, she was educated at Harvard and Oxford and was a moderate candidate.
Benazir was not the only one hurt in the blast, live coverage shows ambulances and bodies everywhere in the area outside of the rally. 15 people have been confirmed dead so far. This is not the only attempt on her life this year, previously a 15 year old boy was stopped from detonating a suicide bomb.
Bhutto was the first female leader in the Muslim world.
