In Atlanta, nearly 39 per cent of parking meters are replaced every year because the thieves
saw off the parking meters and steal the money inside.
And the police have no intentions to investigate the crime. The city officials claim the meters don’t cost a lot of money to replace, so they don't seem to mind it much. It costs about $500 to replace each parking meter, according to Sandra Jennings, deputy commissioner of the city’s transportation office.
One of the main reasons the police don’t investigate it because the city officials didn’t file a report after the meters got stolen. As a result, the police say if they are not reported stolen, then they won’t investigate it.
Jennings said they are replacing the meters with more secure meters and said the money gained from the parking fees pays for itself.
