Op-Ed: Supporters decide Ron Paul needs a Blimp

by S.H. Mills.
Those crazy “Paulites” have really gone and done it this time. Using an ingenious strategy, they hired a blimp for their candidate. Yes, a real blimp. Dr. Paul is the first to have one. This campaign has been quite a ride and it’s far from over.
Speaking of rides, members of the press may soon be able to save a seat on the Ron Paul blimp. Somehow, space doesn’t seem like it will be a problem. How many “mainstream media” types will be rushing to cover the latest effort in the Ron Paul Revolution?

It will be interesting to see how some attempt to spin, ignore, or downplay this one. The first likely issue will be reports to the Federal Election Commission complaining about the expenditure.

Good luck with that.

The ingenious aspect of operation blimp is the fact that Paul supporters sought advice to make sure everything was kosher before making this wish into a reality. They consulted with Bradley Smith formerly of the FEC, per NolanChart.com.

Not only have they found a way to launch the blimp project legally, they have also managed to do so in a way that will potentially cause media outlets to join any challenges they face concerning election laws.

A for-profit company was created, which will sell advertising to those who wish to purchase political messages. If this method is challenged, every television and radio news show, every newspaper, magazine, and even news websites could find themselves either forced to stop selling political ads or find themselves jumping on the bandwagon to support - you guessed it, Paul supporters’ efforts to keep this free speech option available.

The “money bomb” guy, Trevor Lyman had a hand in this project as well. The Ron Paul blimp is scheduled to take off tomorrow and to be present for the next money bomb, the anniversary of the Boston Tea Party, December 16.

What will the Paul supporters think of next?

First, they swarmed the Internet with a vengeance trying to get their guy some election coverage. They went from groups of visitors on social networking sites to boots on the ground Meet Up groups. They stood outside and waved signs. They voted in straw polls (with Paul winning most of them) because it was proclaimed that Internet polls were spammed. The “official” polls often didn’t include their candidate, hid his name under “other,” or only polled former Republican voters. They raised record-breaking amounts of money for their candidate. They bought a full page ad in USA Today. Yet, still, some in the media ignored the pink elephant jumping up and down in the corner of the room as if it weren’t there.

So, now Paul supporters have come up with another revolutionary idea to get their candidate some attention – the Ron Paul Blimp. No other candidate has ever had a blimp, making this an “historic event,” per Reuters.

Crazy? Yeah, like a fox.
