The French President Nicolas Sarkozy and his girlfriend of three months, former model Carla Bruni, have tied the knot. The ceremony was performed in Paris by the mayor, who informed the press that the bride wore white and looks 'ravishing'.
The marriage has surprised the press, despite its months long paparazzi campaign. Francois Lebel, the Paris mayor, confirmed the event to radio station, French Europe-1, after another radio station, RTL, had reported that the marriage had taken place at the president's residence, the Elysee Palace. The mayor added that the people present were close family and friends. It had been an intimate affair and Lebel described it as 'of great simplicity' as well as a display of 'a lot of affection between the spouses'.
Sarkozy, 53, divorced his former wife, Cecilia last October. His new wife is 40 years old.
It is the first time a French president married whilst on the job. Sarkozy met his new wife last November. News of their involvement broke when they visited Disneyland Paris together. The event was soon followed by trips to Egypt and Jordan.
Both have children and Bruni in the past has been involved with Mick Jagger and Eric Clapton. It is Sarkozi's third marriage.
