Tsering Chungtak the Tibetan entrant was expelled from an international beauty pageant in Malaysia. She says China is responsible for her getting kicked out of the competition.
While Tsering Chungtak said that she did not have a political agenda, she said the
competition organizers were pressured by the Chinese government. They were pressured to replace the “Miss Tibet” sash with a “Miss Tibet-China” sash. Chungtak claims that upon her refusal to wear the new sash, she was told to leave the Miss Tourism 2007 competition.
Currently, Tibet is an autonomous nation governed by China. The country quickly stamps out any suggestion that Tibet became an independent nation.
Chungtak is an ethnic Tibetan, and living in Delhi Chungtak said wearing that sash in the competition would be unacceptable. She is quite shocked as the pageant is a simple beauty contest with no ties to politics.
There have been no official comments from China about the case.
It is not the first time an entrant from Tibet has claimed Chinese influence and pressure on the competition. Tashi Yangchen also left the contest in 2005 due to a similar situation.
The country was invaded by China in 1950. Many Tibetans are in exile including the Dalai Lama.
