The poll of 2,455 U.S. adults found that 82 per cent of those surveyed believed in God; 79 per cent believed in miracles, 75 per cent in heaven, while 72 per cent believed that Jesus is God or the Son of God. Belief in hell and the devil was expressed by 62 per cent.
Darwin's theory of evolution met a far more skeptical audience. Only 42 per cent of those surveyed said they believed in Darwin's theory which largely informs how biology and related sciences are approached.
Belief in higher powers was not confined to that in a Christian however; the survey, which has a sampling error of plus or minus two per cent, found that 35 per cent of the respondents believed in UFOs and 31 per cent in witches.
