If this is a sign of things to come, maybe the American-led coalition forces in Iraq will get a little bit of relief. The Saudi Arabian government conducted a sweep against terrorists in their own country.
The Saudi Government has announced the arrest of over 200 suspects who were plotting to destroy an oil plant. Officials said on Wednesday that the suspects had formed six cells and were planning to attack a logistical oil facility in the Eastern Province.
More than half of the arrested individuals were linked to parties outside of Saudi Arabia that specialized in recruiting members. They would send these members to trouble spots in the region to fight for their causes, only to return and cause chaos within Saudi Arabia. It is suspected that these “trouble spots” were in Iraq; many of the militants fighting U.S. soldiers there are actually Saudis.
Several of the cells had specific plans, according to the Ministry of the Interior. One cell was working on smuggling rockets into Saudi Arabia. The cell was headed by a foreign resident. The Saudi police foiled their imminent attack. Another cell was accused of plotting assassination attempts on scholars and security individuals associated with Islam.
Hopefully this story is actually true and is a sign of things to come for that area. Reducing the number of infiltrators going into Iraq simply to fight Americans would make us a little safer. Then we as citizens would have a little more confidence in Saudi Arabia. I guess once their own oil became a threat (their oil= our business) it was time to step things up.
