007 Franchise Harms Britain's Spy Recruitment Process

By Can Tran     Nov 27, 2007 in World
The James Bond franchise should be the perfect tool to recruit secret operatives for Britain’s intelligence agencies. But, the service’s chief recruiter during an interview with BBC radio says the opposite.
According to the interview, the James Bond franchise distorts the work of MI6 once of the most notable intelligence agencies of Britain. It further added that it would hurt the work to recruit more minorities such as Muslims and women into the ranks.
The chief recruiter stated: “It does tend to turn up quite a lot of thrill seekers and fantasists and we’re really not interested in them.”
BBC Radio One was allowed by MI6 to conduct the interview inside the headquarters located in London, Britain. This interview is part of the push to recruit fresh members into the ranks of MI6.
He also added that Bond is not the ideal spy. The official also added that those such as minorities with a different ethnicity can go to places and meet people than operatives from a white background cannot. He added that there are places where white males cannot go.
Their recent advertisement tried to appeal to Somali speakers. They said in the job listings that headquarters has basketball courts, a lounge, and a bar.
At the same time; MI5, which in charge of domestic security has also tried to recruit more minorities into the ranks.
But, both groups have been criticized by the Muslim community.
