The Department of Defense has ordered the use of Marine and Navy vessels to help with humanitarian aide efforts in Bangladesh which was recently and tragically hit by Tropical Cyclone Sidr.
The United States Navy and Marines have been set the task of assisting in relief efforts for the storm ravaged country of Bangladesh that recently lost over 3,500 of its people to the tropical cyclone Sidr. Over two million more were displaced and thousands are missing or injured.
The Department of Defense stated in a press release:
"[The] U.S. Pacific Command is providing transportation assistance, to include heavy lift helicopter support. U.S. Navy and Marine Corps helicopters from the USS Kearsarge and the USS Tarawa will assist with the transportation of relief supplies, equipment and personnel."
The appropriate amount of aid was decided by a cooperation of US Pacific Command team that assessed the infrastructure and flooding damage and the Bangladesh military.
Medical teams from the two Naval fleets will also be training Bangladesh military members in Unites States medical techniques so they could assist further in the relief efforts.
The first wave of the effort has already been conducted with the help of helicopters and a C-130 that carried much needed water and food supplies to Barisal and other places unreachable by damaged infrastructure.
Helipads were built in strategic locations to assist in the movement of goods via U.S Helicopters deployed from the USS Kearsarge.
