Ron Paul's campaign raised $4.2 million on Nov. 5th and other candidates have taken notice. A Barack Obama supporter created an event called Barack's Friday that was supposed to raise the campaign $5 million on Nov. 16th.
The 16 was chosen because it was the day after a Democratic Candidates Debate.
Girish Manchaiah, Creator of the event, has
stressed that it is not his goal to surpass Ron Paul's fundraising day.
"
This is our tribute to senator Obama," he says. "
This is not about winning something, but about how much more we can do for this campaign."
It seems as though Ron Paul's uncontested grassroots support has struck a nerve in the Democratic Party.
Supporters of Barack's Friday have made such comments as "...if Ron Paul supporters can do it, so can we. Can we really do it?"
Even Markos Moulitsas of the DailyKos
complimented Dr. Paul on his successful fundraising day and internet prowess. In fact, he called Congressman Paul's fundraising event "
the single biggest example of people-power this cycle."
When asked whether Ron Paul's record fundraising day was of any inspiration, Manchaiah, a 35-year-old software engineer
said, "
Not really -- I think Ron Paul's people are inspired by what we're doing online."
That is a little ironic considering the event raised a mere $4,650 from 72 individuals. Mike Huckabee has also attempted a money-bomb which pulled in $95,000. Fred Thompson had Fred's Giving Day, which received a total of 82 pledges. Those numbers are nothing compared to what Dr. Paul was able to raise.
